Strawberry Lane is an independent special school for pupils with education, health and care (EHC) plans, many of whom have autism and have experienced disrupted or minimal prior education. This was its first standard inspection since registration in 2025, and it met the independent school standards in all categories, with safeguarding standards met. Attendance and behaviour and inclusion were judged to be strong standards, while achievement, curriculum and teaching, leadership and governance, and personal development and wellbeing were all at the expected standard. The school's work around attendance is a particular strength: many pupils previously attended poorly, but now attend regularly and want to come to school. Leaders are relentless in supporting attendance and removing barriers to learning, and this work has been pivotal in re-engaging pupils. Pupils behave well, bullying and discrimination are rare, and classrooms are calm and focused. The proprietor and leaders share a clear vision, and parents and commissioning local authorities are highly positive. The main areas for development are around further sharpening the quality of teaching. Occasionally, learning tasks are not fully effective in helping pupils learn as leaders intend, and strategies to embed highly consistent teaching are still being developed in some curriculum areas. Leaders are already working to align professional development precisely to curriculum improvement priorities, and this remains the key next step.
