Opal Education is a small independent special school that was having its first standard inspection since registration in June 2025. All 10 pupils have education, health and care plans for social, emotional and mental health needs, and many join after significant disruption and prolonged non-attendance elsewhere. Safeguarding standards are met, and inclusion is a relative strength: leaders identify pupils' needs swiftly, build trusting relationships and provide effective support that helps pupils feel they belong and begin to re-engage with education. The school has notable pastoral and therapeutic strengths. Staff use positive relationships and carefully designed experiences to build pupils' confidence, improve attendance and help them manage their emotions and behaviour. Pupils benefit from a well-taught phonics programme, expert tutoring for those ready for exams, high-quality wellbeing support and a rich range of activities that promote social, moral and cultural development. Leaders are strong advocates for pupils and work effectively with families and other agencies. However, several important areas need attention. Leaders have not yet clearly identified the essential knowledge pupils need, and curriculum and assessment are not adapted precisely enough to pupils' SEND and gaps in prior knowledge. PSHE/RSE is not taught consistently, oversight of attendance and behaviour is underdeveloped, records are not rigorous, careers guidance and work experience are limited, and regular fire evacuation practice has not been ensured. The proprietor has not yet secured consistent leadership capacity to meet the independent school standards, which are not met in quality of education, welfare/health/safety and leadership. Actions are underway but are too early to show impact.
