Schools in Whitehaven

Whitehaven, a maritime town in England's Cumbria, boasts a rich history that includes being the third-largest UK port during the 18th century. The town's prosperity was built on coal trade, initiated by the Lowther family, who transformed the landscape with Georgian architecture and a modern grid plan. The port, strong in coal, tobacco, and shipbuilding, flourished over centuries. Although coal mining ended in the late 20th century, modern chemical works and a revitalized harbor have sustained local industry, with tourism also emerging as a strong economic driver. Whitehaven currently has a population of around 25,500 and enjoys a cultural heritage that includes historic architecture and robust maritime events.
