Grand Avenue Primary and Nursery School is a larger-than-average inclusive primary that inspectors found to be performing securely overall, meeting expected standards across most areas while inclusion is a standout strength. Safeguarding standards are met. Pupils are happy, safe and well cared for, with a nurturing ethos, strong pastoral support, positive behaviour and good relationships. The school is ambitious for all, including disadvantaged pupils and those with SEND, and attainment by the end of Year 6 is consistently above national averages in reading, writing and mathematics, though disadvantaged pupils’ outcomes are closer to national and gaps remain, particularly in mathematics and writing. Leaders have built a coherent, ambitious curriculum, with reading prioritised and effective early reading and phonics. SEND provision is carefully designed, and staff typically teach well. However, teaching is not consistently sharp in checking and probing pupils’ understanding to address misconceptions and deepen knowledge, and opportunities to develop and use vocabulary are sometimes missed, including in early years. Attendance is broadly in line with national averages, but leaders should continue work to secure consistently high attendance, especially for disadvantaged and persistently absent pupils. Pupils also need more detailed knowledge of British values and different faiths to fully understand their significance. Governance and leadership are strong: leaders know the community well, staff feel supported, and governors fulfil statutory duties. The early years provides a nurturing start and prepares children well for Year 1, though language development could be extended more consistently. Overall, this is a good school with a highly inclusive culture and clear priorities for continued improvement.
