Malden Parochial CofE Primary School is a caring, inclusive Church of England primary where pupils feel safe, behave well and attend regularly. Inspectors found strong standards in attendance and behaviour and in personal development and wellbeing, with a calm, purposeful ethos underpinned by the school’s Christian values. Safeguarding standards are met. Achievement, curriculum and teaching, early years, inclusion, and leadership and governance are all at the expected standard. Pupils achieve well in reading and mathematics by the end of key stage 2, phonics and mathematical fluency are taught consistently, and leaders have improved writing. Inclusion is a clear priority, and governors and leaders know the school well. However, learning in the wider curriculum is not consistently deep, and training for high-quality teaching is not yet embedded in all subjects. The main development points are to embed high-quality teaching so pupils gain in-depth knowledge across the curriculum, and to make early years staff interactions more consistently effective at moving children’s learning forward. Published data shows disadvantaged pupils’ combined outcomes below national averages, but cohorts are small and the report notes that disadvantaged pupils achieve well alongside their peers.
