St Mary’s Church of England Primary School, Hawkshaw is a small, welcoming primary where a strong Christian vision and caring ethos create a real sense of togetherness. Staff have high expectations for pupils, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities, and pupils are respectful, polite and behave well. Parents and pupils speak highly of the school, and pupils benefit from strong pastoral care and a broad range of opportunities. The school’s strengths include a strong reading culture, a broad and ambitious curriculum in most subjects, and an impressive personal development programme. Pupils take on responsible roles, enjoy clubs and trips, and are well prepared for life in modern Britain. Leadership is effective, governors provide appropriate support and challenge, staff morale is good, and safeguarding is effective. However, early years provision is the main area for development. The early years curriculum does not clearly identify the precise knowledge and skills children need, and activities do not always support progression, so some children are not as well prepared for key stage 1 as they could be. Some staff also lack the phonics training needed to support pupils who struggle to read, and in a few subjects the curriculum is not yet well sequenced enough for pupils to build knowledge securely. This was the school’s first routine inspection since the COVID-19 pandemic and its first section 5 inspection since 2015; it was previously judged outstanding and, under the current framework, does not receive an overall effectiveness grade.

Admissions: local authority offers data from the Department for Education. A school is oversubscribed when at least 5% of the families who put it first were not offered a place, and undersubscribed when everyone who put it first got in but 10% or more of its places were unfilled in the Department's school capacity survey (the latest survey is used for entry years it does not cover). Places: Department for Education, School capacity, from local authorities' annual survey as at 1 May. Each year is the one the school year ends in (2025 is 2024–25); the survey was not run in 2020. Places include sixth form places. Forecasts are the local authority's own for the school's planning area, an area it uses to plan places that is not the school's catchment area. The forecast starts from a head count in 2025; the dashed line is the Department's estimate of places in that area, including those the authority has firm plans for. Planned places are cumulative, and only those with firm plans are counted.

Turnover and sickness figures run one year behind the ratios. Sick leave is the share of teachers who took at least one day in the year, so it swings widely at small schools, where a few teachers can make it 0% or 100%.
