Gateshead Jewish Boarding School is an orthodox Jewish boys’ school for pupils aged 10 to 16. This was a progress monitoring inspection following a September 2025 standard inspection at which the school was judged not to meet all independent school standards. The school still does not meet all of the standards checked. While leaders have made some useful improvements, the core compliance problems identified previously remain unresolved. On the positive side, safeguarding is secure, recruitment checks and the single central record are appropriate, and information for parents is in place. The school has introduced a reading assessment system, begun to develop PSHE lessons on growing up and health, broadened its extra-curricular offer, and increased use of the library. However, the school still does not teach pupils about the protected characteristics of sexual orientation and gender reassignment, and its curriculum does not meet statutory requirements for protected characteristics or relationships and sex education. Leaders’ approach relies on teaching general respect rather than ensuring pupils learn about all protected characteristics and different family relationships in modern Britain. Consequently, the previously unmet standards in Parts 1, 2 and 8 continue to be unmet, and the Department for Education found the school’s action plan unsuitable. The school has also recently been acting beyond its registration: it had 153 pupils on roll when registered for 147, although leaders expect to be within capacity going forward. Overall, the school has made partial progress but remains non-compliant in significant areas, with leadership and management not yet ensuring all standards are met consistently.
