Broughton-in-Amounderness Church of England Primary School is a highly effective primary school where pupils are happy, safe and behave exceptionally well. The curriculum is ambitious and carefully sequenced, reading is central to the school’s work, and pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities are well supported and achieve well. Early years provision gives children a strong start, and personal development and enrichment are exceptional, with pupils benefiting from a wide range of clubs, trips and leadership responsibilities. Leadership and governance are strong, safeguarding is effective, and staff are well supported. This was the school’s first routine section 5 inspection since 2012, having previously been exempt, and no overall effectiveness grade is awarded under the current framework. The main areas for improvement are in the quality of education. In some subjects, pupils do not consistently apply writing skills such as spelling, grammar and letter formation across the wider curriculum, which hampers their writing fluency. In a few subjects, pupils also lack enough opportunities to revisit and recap previous learning, making it harder for them to remember and build on what they have been taught. Leaders have already identified these weaknesses and are taking action to address them.
