Dunholme St Chad's Church of England Primary School is a voluntary-controlled primary school in Lincolnshire with 203 pupils. Following its previous 'requires improvement' inspection, this graded inspection found the school to be good across quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, leadership and management, and early years provision. Inspectors described a calm, orderly and nurturing school where pupils are polite, friendly, behave well and enjoy learning. Staff are ambitious for all pupils, relationships are warm, and the school has a strong sense of community. The school's strengths include a broad and ambitious curriculum that is taught well in most subjects, strong early reading and phonics, effective support for pupils with SEND, improved attendance, and a purposeful early years provision. Pupils benefit from a well-planned personal development curriculum and a wide range of clubs, trips and community activities. Staff morale is high, governors understand the school well, and safeguarding arrangements are effective. The main areas for improvement are that a small number of subjects are not taught with the same clarity and depth as others, leaving gaps in pupils' knowledge. In some subjects, leaders also lack a comprehensive way of checking the precise impact of the curriculum, which limits their ability to identify further improvements. The school is well placed to address these points within its positive culture of teamwork and continual improvement.

  • The school has a broad and ambitious curriculum that is taught well in most subjects.

  • Early reading and phonics are a high priority, with structured teaching and strong staff training.
  • Pupils with SEND are quickly identified and mostly follow the same curriculum as their peers.

  • Early years provision builds strong foundations through warm relationships and well-planned learning opportunities.
  • Personal development prepares pupils well for life in modern Britain and supports their health and well-being.
  • Staff morale is high, and leaders support workload and well-being.
  • Governors understand the school well and provide effective challenge and support.

Areas for Improvement

  • In a few subjects, the curriculum is not delivered consistently well, so pupils have gaps in knowledge and do not gain the same depth of understanding as in other subjects.
  • In some subjects, the school does not measure the precise impact of the curriculum, so leaders cannot accurately identify where further improvements are needed.
  • Some parts of the curriculum are not yet taught in the same depth as others.
  • Leaders have not yet developed an agreed approach to teaching the most important knowledge in these weaker subjects.

Admissions: local authority offers data from the Department for Education. A school is oversubscribed when at least 5% of the families who put it first were not offered a place, and undersubscribed when everyone who put it first got in but 10% or more of its places were unfilled in the Department's school capacity survey (the latest survey is used for entry years it does not cover). Places: Department for Education, School capacity, from local authorities' annual survey as at 1 May. Each year is the one the school year ends in (2025 is 2024–25); the survey was not run in 2020. Places include sixth form places. Forecasts are the local authority's own for the school's planning area, an area it uses to plan places that is not the school's catchment area. The forecast starts from a head count in 2025; the dashed line is the Department's estimate of places in that area, including those the authority has firm plans for. Planned places are cumulative, and only those with firm plans are counted.

Turnover is the share of a year's teachers (full-time equivalent) who were not at the school the following year, whether they moved to another school or left state-funded teaching. Turnover and sickness figures run one year behind the ratios. Sick leave is the share of teachers who took at least one day in the year, so it swings widely at small schools, where a few teachers can make it 0% or 100%.
