Toton Banks Road Infant and Nursery School is a welcoming, inclusive school where pupils are happy, safe and excited to learn. Inspectors found high expectations, respectful behaviour and overwhelmingly positive parental views. Reading is a clear priority: children begin building early language and phonics skills in Nursery, pupils who fall behind are supported to catch up, and most read accurately and fluently by the end of key stage 1. Pupils with SEND are very well supported, personal development is broad, safeguarding is effective, and staff and governors are well supported and engaged. Most of the curriculum is well organised, particularly mathematics, but the school's work to pin down the essential knowledge pupils should learn and remember is not fully complete. In some subjects this leads to inconsistent recall, and assessment is not used consistently well to identify and close gaps. In the early years, staff do not always use what children already know and can do to shape activities, which creates inconsistency indoors and outside and limits how much some children learn. This was the school's first routine inspection since the COVID-19 pandemic, and there has been a change of headteacher since the previous inspection. Under the current framework no overall effectiveness grade was issued, but the school is performing well overall and has clear, focused areas for further improvement.

Strengths

  • Welcoming and inclusive culture where pupils are happy, safe and excited to learn.
  • High expectations and consistently respectful, courteous and well-mannered pupils.
  • Strong reading and phonics provision, including early identification and catch-up support.
  • Carefully sequenced mathematics curriculum with regular recall of prior knowledge.
  • Very effective support for pupils with SEND, including quick identification and skilful adaptations.
  • Comprehensive personal development programme covering friendships, safety and community involvement.
  • Popular extra-curricular clubs that help pupils develop talents and interests.
  • Effective safeguarding arrangements and a positive safeguarding culture.
  • Staff feel well supported by leaders, and governors provide strong oversight.
  • Early years provision helps children settle quickly and develop communication, social and physical skills.

Areas for Improvement

  • In some subjects, essential knowledge is not yet clearly specified, so pupils' recall is inconsistent.
  • Assessment is not used consistently well across all subjects, so gaps in learning are not always identified and resolved quickly.
  • Early years staff do not always use information about children's prior learning to shape activities, leading to inconsistent provision and missed learning opportunities.

Admissions: local authority offers data from the Department for Education. A school is oversubscribed when at least 5% of the families who put it first were not offered a place, and undersubscribed when everyone who put it first got in but 10% or more of its places were unfilled in the Department's school capacity survey (the latest survey is used for entry years it does not cover). Places: Department for Education, School capacity, from local authorities' annual survey as at 1 May. Each year is the one the school year ends in (2025 is 2024–25); the survey was not run in 2020. Places include sixth form places. Forecasts are the local authority's own for the school's planning area, an area it uses to plan places that is not the school's catchment area. The forecast starts from a head count in 2025; the dashed line is the Department's estimate of places in that area, including those the authority has firm plans for. Planned places are cumulative, and only those with firm plans are counted.

In 2024–25 pupils at Toton Banks Road Infant and Nursery School attended 95.9% of sessions (the national figure for primary schools was 94.8%). 9.0% of pupils were persistently absent, missing at least one session in ten (nationally 13.0%).

Source: Department for Education, School workforce in England. Each year is the one the school year ends in (2025 is 2024/25). Pupils per teacher counts full-time-equivalent pupils and teachers. Turnover is the share of a year's teachers (full-time equivalent) who were not at the school the following year, whether they moved to another school or left state-funded teaching. Turnover and sickness figures run one year behind the ratios. Sick leave is the share of teachers who took at least one day in the year, so it swings widely at small schools, where a few teachers can make it 0% or 100%. The national figures are for all state schools of the same type.
