Boughton Leigh Infant School is a caring infant school where pupils feel safe and behave well, and where personal development and wellbeing are clear strengths. Safeguarding standards are met. Inspectors judged attendance and behaviour, and personal development and wellbeing, as meeting the expected standard, but found that achievement, curriculum and teaching, early years, inclusion, and leadership and governance need attention. The school's strongest features include warm relationships, effective pastoral support, strong promotion of its Woodland values, a calm and orderly environment, and a rich offer of outdoor learning, clubs, trips and responsibilities. Pupils generally read with age-appropriate fluency and achieve well in mathematics. Leaders' work on attendance has halted decline and is reducing persistent absence. The school includes a specialist resourced provision for up to eight pupils with speech, language and communication needs, which opened in January 2026, and at the time of inspection it was being led by the substantive deputy headteacher. However, too many pupils, especially those with SEND and lower starting points, do not secure foundational knowledge in handwriting and spelling, and some pupils in the specialist resourced provision do not make the progress they should. Teaching quality is variable, phonics catch-up is not quick enough for some pupils, early years writing and learning environments are inconsistent, and inclusion plans are not precise enough. Leaders have identified the right priorities and are beginning to increase the pace of improvement, but monitoring and implementation are not yet consistently effective, and governors do not yet have a clear enough understanding of the impact of improvement work.

  • Some staff do not have an accurate enough understanding of pupils' needs and starting points.
  • Handwriting and spelling are not consistently checked or assessed well enough.
  • Early years writing teaching is less effective and environments/resources do not always support intended learning.
  • Some early years activities lack clear learning focus and staff do not know what children need next.
  • Inclusion plans lack precision, so staff are not always clear how to support pupils.
  • Leaders do not monitor SEND support closely enough or understand how well SEND and disadvantaged pupils are learning.
  • Improvement actions sometimes lack precision and pace is too slow to embed consistently.
  • Governors do not have a sufficiently clear understanding of the impact of some leaders' work.
  • Overall absence and persistent absence were above national averages in 2024/25.

Admissions: local authority offers data from the Department for Education. A school is oversubscribed when at least 5% of the families who put it first were not offered a place, and undersubscribed when everyone who put it first got in but 10% or more of its places were unfilled in the Department's school capacity survey (the latest survey is used for entry years it does not cover). Places: Department for Education, School capacity, from local authorities' annual survey as at 1 May. Each year is the one the school year ends in (2025 is 2024–25); the survey was not run in 2020. Places include sixth form places. Forecasts are the local authority's own for the school's planning area, an area it uses to plan places that is not the school's catchment area. The forecast starts from a head count in 2025; the dashed line is the Department's estimate of places in that area, including those the authority has firm plans for. Planned places are cumulative, and only those with firm plans are counted.

Exclusion figures dropped in 2020 and 2021 because of school closures.

Source: Department for Education, School workforce in England. Each year is the one the school year ends in (2025 is 2024/25). Pupils per teacher counts full-time-equivalent pupils and teachers. Turnover is the share of a year's teachers (full-time equivalent) who were not at the school the following year, whether they moved to another school or left state-funded teaching. Turnover and sickness figures run one year behind the ratios. Sick leave is the share of teachers who took at least one day in the year, so it swings widely at small schools, where a few teachers can make it 0% or 100%. The national figures are for all state schools of the same type.
