Sir Alexander Fleming Primary School is a warm and welcoming community primary with nursery provision for two-year-olds. This was its first routine inspection since the COVID-19 pandemic and, under the current framework, no overall effectiveness grade was given; the school was judged good for quality of education, personal development, leadership and management, and early years provision, with behaviour and attitudes outstanding. Pupils are happy, respectful and highly engaged in learning, behaviour is exemplary, children get off to a strong start in Nursery, pupils with SEND flourish, and reading is a clear priority. Leaders have addressed historical behaviour concerns and the school is now calm and orderly. The curriculum is broad and ambitious, PSHE is effective, and governors are committed and increasingly robust in supporting and challenging leaders. Parents have confidence in the school and attendance is generally strong. The main area for improvement is writing and presentation. Expectations for handwriting, letter and number formation, and the recording of calculations are not consistently high, implementation of the writing curriculum is uneven, and teachers do not always correct common writing errors quickly enough. Published outcomes also do not consistently reflect the strong progress pupils make in school.
