Rawlins

Rawlins is a large, inclusive secondary school where pupils are happy, feel safe and generally behave well. Behaviour and attitudes, personal development, leadership and management, and sixth-form provision are all good, while the quality of education requires improvement. The school is part of Embrace Multi Academy Trust and has a relatively new principal; it also has specialist provision for pupils with moderate learning difficulties and autism. Safeguarding arrangements are effective. The curriculum is generally ambitious and well sequenced, and it is implemented particularly well in English, mathematics and science. Sixth-form students achieve strongly, careers education is a strength, and pupils benefit from a wide range of extra-curricular activities and high-quality pastoral support. Pupils with EHC plans are very well supported, especially through the ‘Skills for Learning’ provision, and reading support is increasingly effective. However, curriculum implementation is inconsistent in some subjects in Years 7 to 11, which limits how securely some pupils retain knowledge. Some pupils with SEND who do not have EHC plans are less well supported because the information teachers receive is not precise enough. In addition, some disadvantaged pupils do not attend well enough, and the school’s actions to improve this have not yet had a consistent impact.
