Harton Academy, located in South Shields, NE34 6DL, is a distinguished mixed secondary and sixth form institution with an extensive educational history dating back to 1885 as South Shields High School. The academy is an integral part of the South Tyneside local authority and has a motto of Tradition, Innovation, Excellence. Harton Academy was formally Harton Technology College or Harton Comprehensive School, and it has earned notable distinctions: an 'outstanding' rating by Ofsted in 2006, recognition as one of the UK's top 50 most improved specialist schools, a place among the 12 outstanding schools serving disadvantaged communities in 2009 and 2013, and a prestigious designation as a teaching school by the National College for Teaching and Leadership in 2011.
