Kellington Primary School has improved significantly since its previous inspection and is now judged good in quality of education, personal development, leadership and management, and early years provision, while behaviour and attitudes requires improvement. It is a caring and inclusive school where the ‘Kellington Way’ values of kindness, respect and hard work are promoted well, and positive relationships and a deep understanding of pupils’ needs are central. Most pupils behave well in a calm and orderly environment, although a small number of older pupils do not consistently meet the school’s raised expectations. The curriculum is ambitious in most respects, phonics teaching is consistent and effective, support for pupils with SEND is strong, and children get a positive start in the early years. Personal development is a notable strength, with a wide-ranging programme supporting mental health, well-being, community involvement, outdoor learning and aspirations. Leadership is effective, staff feel valued, governance fulfils its duties, and safeguarding arrangements are effective. The main concerns are that behaviour strategies are not applied consistently for older pupils, which can disrupt lessons; attendance remains too low, with too many pupils persistently absent and missing learning; and some aspects of the key stage 2 reading curriculum are not planned in enough detail to build pupils’ knowledge securely over time. The school is an academy converter within The STAR Multi Academy Trust, and under the current inspection framework no overall effectiveness grade is awarded.
