Ofsted carried out a material change inspection at Abbeywood School, an independent special school for pupils with social, emotional and mental health needs, learning difficulties and neurodevelopmental needs including autism. The school applied to increase its capacity from 96 to 102 pupils and widen its age range from 8–18 to 5–18. Inspectors found the school is likely to meet the relevant independent school standards if those changes are implemented, reflecting strong leadership, robust systems and a clear focus on pupils’ wellbeing. Leadership is a notable strength: leaders are passionate, well informed and work closely with the Witherslack Group proprietor, whose support and shared systems provide effective quality assurance. The curriculum, teaching, assessment, safeguarding and welfare arrangements are well developed and tailored to the proposed age range. Staff know pupils well, early reading and oracy are prioritised, and there are effective transition, attendance and behaviour-support systems. The school was judged good for quality of education at its previous inspection in November 2023. The report identifies only limited concerns. Some minor health and safety or maintenance issues, such as lighting and water temperatures, were not always addressed swiftly enough and had to be fixed during the inspection. There is also known wear and tear, including decaying outdoor panelling and fencing that needs refreshing. Leaders also recognise that toilet facilities will need adjusting if younger pupils join. Overall, the school is well prepared for the proposed material change.
