The Willows School is a special school where all pupils have an education, health and care plan, catering for moderate learning difficulties and speech, language and communication needs. It has a friendly, inclusive and nurturing culture where pupils feel safe, behave well and attend eagerly; a calm atmosphere and strong relationships help pupils to learn and thrive. Attendance is above the national average and has been sustained over several years, and safeguarding requirements are met. Personal development and wellbeing are central to the school's work, with a wide range of enrichment, community and work-related experiences that prepare pupils well for adulthood. Leadership and governance are effective, post-16 provision is strong, and inclusion is well supported, with staff using EHC plans to shape learning and provide personalised support. The main area for improvement is the curriculum. The needs of some younger pupils joining the school have changed significantly in recent years, and curriculum content has not always adapted quickly enough to meet those needs. A revised curriculum has recently been introduced but is at an early stage, and approaches to identifying and addressing gaps in pupils' knowledge vary between subjects; pupils do not catch up as quickly as they could in writing. Leaders have rightly identified these issues and are taking action, but it is too early to judge the impact. Overall, pupils achieve well from their individual starting points and most move on to suitable destinations. The school is part of Nexus Multi Academy Trust and joined it in September 2023. The number of pupils attending has increased significantly since the previous inspection, and the school is over subscribed compared with its capacity. Inspectors confirmed that the school meets the provider access legislation requirements.

A pupil can be suspended more than once, so suspensions per 100 pupils can be higher than the share of pupils suspended. Very small numbers are hidden by the DfE. Exclusion figures dropped in 2020 and 2021 because of school closures.

Source: Department for Education, School workforce in England. Each year is the one the school year ends in (2025 is 2024/25). Pupils per teacher counts full-time-equivalent pupils and teachers. Turnover is the share of a year's teachers (full-time equivalent) who were not at the school the following year, whether they moved to another school or left state-funded teaching. Turnover and sickness figures run one year behind the ratios. Sick leave is the share of teachers who took at least one day in the year, so it swings widely at small schools, where a few teachers can make it 0% or 100%. The national figures are for all state schools of the same type.
