Elements Academy is a special school for pupils aged 7 to 16 with special educational needs and/or disabilities, mostly social, emotional and mental health needs, and all pupils have an EHC plan. This was its first routine section 5 inspection, and it took place during a period of change: the headteacher was absent, trust leaders were overseeing the school, and a recently formed interim management board was in place. Inspectors found the school requires improvement in all four key judgements, although safeguarding is effective and there are clear signs of improvement after trust-led reset of expectations. The school's strengths include a more coherent curriculum, a developing reading culture, strong pastoral care and effective careers guidance. Pupils benefit from calm, consistent behaviour management and therapeutic support, and trustees provide effective support and challenge. However, pupils do not achieve as well as they should. Teaching is not consistently strong, especially where staff teach outside their specialism, and learning is not consistently adapted to pupils' complex needs. Attendance and persistent absence remain serious concerns, and behaviour incidents requiring physical intervention are too frequent, though decreasing. Leaders need to improve staff subject knowledge and adaptive teaching, strengthen attendance work, and sharpen oversight and record-keeping for pupils on part-time timetables or alternative provision. Communication with parents and other stakeholders has suffered during turbulence and needs to improve, and some staff are concerned about workload. Overall, the school is moving in the right direction but still has significant work to do before provision is consistently good.

A pupil can be suspended more than once, so suspensions per 100 pupils can be higher than the share of pupils suspended. Very small numbers are hidden by the DfE. Exclusion figures dropped in 2020 and 2021 because of school closures.

Turnover is the share of a year's teachers (full-time equivalent) who were not at the school the following year, whether they moved to another school or left state-funded teaching. Turnover and sickness figures run one year behind the ratios. Sick leave is the share of teachers who took at least one day in the year, so it swings widely at small schools, where a few teachers can make it 0% or 100%. The national figures are for all state schools of the same type.
