Elysian, Liss is an independent special school for pupils with social, emotional and mental health needs, all of whom have an EHC plan. At its May 2026 standard inspection, safeguarding standards were met and all independent school standards were met. Provision is strongest in inclusion and personal development and wellbeing. Leaders place inclusion at the heart of their work, use highly personalised and therapeutic approaches—including animal-assisted therapies—and have created a coherent pastoral and personal development programme. Pupils attend happily, behave well, and benefit from strong relationships and preparation for adulthood, careers and community participation. The quality of education is generally expected standard. Pupils achieve well from their starting points in many subjects, especially mathematics and reading, and benefit from equine studies, animal care and outdoor learning pathways. However, achievement is not consistently strong in writing, including spelling and handwriting, and some pupils have gaps in foundational transcription knowledge. The curriculum is well sequenced and improved since the previous inspection, but teaching does not always focus precisely enough on the subject-specific knowledge pupils need to learn. Leadership and governance are expected standard. Leaders are reflective, staff feel supported, and parents are overwhelmingly positive. The proprietor has effective systems to meet statutory requirements. The main areas for improvement are to strengthen transcription and foundational knowledge, make lesson activities consistently focus on intended subject knowledge, and ensure staff professional learning is evidence-informed and sharply matched to school improvement priorities.
