Pathway School is a small independent special school for pupils with social, emotional and mental health needs, all of whom have education, health and care plans. Inspectors found the school meeting expected standards across the evaluated areas, with safeguarding met and all independent school standards met. The school provides a nurturing, calm environment where pupils feel known and valued, and strong pastoral support helps pupils manage emotions and behaviour, improve attendance and build respectful relationships. The therapeutic curriculum and inclusion are central strengths, and teachers are skilled and consistent. Pupils benefit from tailored on-site and off-site provision, strong personal development and enrichment, and positive relationships with parents. However, reading and writing provision is less developed than mathematics, some foundation subject curricula do not consistently identify the key knowledge pupils should learn, and individual pathways are not always closely aligned to EHC plan outcomes. Personal development and PSHE for pupils on individual pathways are not yet fully secure. Leaders know the school well and make changes quickly, but their day-to-day involvement limits strategic oversight of pupils' performance. Proprietors need to focus more closely on educational outcomes and strengthen their ability to hold leaders to account. The next steps centre on aligning curriculum and provision to EHC plan outcomes for all pupils, strengthening subject knowledge across every pathway, and improving proprietor oversight of educational performance.
