St Paul’s CofE Primary is a small, inclusive and nurturing Church of England school where pupils feel happy, safe and well supported. Inspectors found a positive, family-like atmosphere, calm and orderly behaviour, strong relationships and effective safeguarding. The school is ambitious for all pupils, and pupils with SEND are extremely well supported, with early identification and precise plans helping them succeed in lessons. Reading is a clear priority, supported by a new library and strong early reading practice, and the early years provision is exceptionally strong, giving children a secure foundation across areas of learning. Leadership has changed recently, with a new executive headteacher from September 2023 and a new headteacher from March 2024. The newly established leadership team has acted decisively to improve behaviour and the quality of education, and staff feel valued and well supported. Governors understand the school’s challenges, and the school draws on expertise from partnership schools. This was the school’s first routine inspection since the COVID-19 pandemic and its first section 5 inspection since 2015, when it was exempt after being judged outstanding; under current arrangements, no overall effectiveness grade was awarded. The main area for improvement is the implementation of the revised curriculum in some subjects in Years 1 to 6. Because this is still in its early stages, pupils are not consistently building knowledge in a logical sequence and do not always develop a deep understanding of key concepts before moving on. Leaders should ensure that pupils secure understanding of key concepts before progressing to new content so that progression through the curriculum is stronger over time.
