Woodlands Primary School serves a disadvantaged community experiencing rapid change, with well-above-average free school meals and above-average SEN support. Under a headteacher appointed in January 2025, leaders have responded swiftly to improve behaviour, attendance and the curriculum, and these efforts are gaining traction: behaviour and attendance are now at the expected standard, and pupils, staff and parents report a strong sense of belonging. The personal development offer is the cornerstone of the school, and its pastoral provision — including the Rainbow Room and regulation stations — is a particular strength. Safeguarding is effective and the school has an open culture of keeping pupils safe. The core weakness is pupils' achievement. Attainment in reading, writing and mathematics at the end of key stage 2 remains below national averages over time, including for disadvantaged pupils and those with SEND, so many pupils are not fully prepared for secondary school. Curriculum and teaching require attention: the curriculum is now well sequenced but implementation is inconsistent across classes, misconceptions are not always addressed quickly, and adaptations for pupils with SEND are uneven. Early years is also identified as needing attention, with staff interactions not consistently nurturing language development and basic skills such as letter formation not secured. Inclusion needs attention because goals for pupils needing extra support are not specific enough to ensure effective classroom adaptations. Leaders demonstrate a clear understanding of these barriers and have prioritised the right areas for development, with staff training underway in writing, handwriting and spelling. Governors, including a relatively new chair, provide increasingly confident challenge, and leaders manage change at pace while keeping pupils at the centre. The next steps focus on embedding consistent curriculum delivery, sharpening assessment, raising expectations in writing and improving early years interactions so that recent improvements translate into secure outcomes for all pupils.

Strengths

  • Behaviour and attendance have improved rapidly, with persistent absence falling significantly and pupils understanding and following staff expectations.
  • Leaders have created an open safeguarding culture where pupils feel safe and are confident about how to keep themselves safe online and in the community.
  • The personal development programme is the cornerstone of the school, offering trips, clubs, leadership roles and cultural experiences that build confidence and broaden horizons.
  • Pastoral support is a particular strength, with systems such as the Rainbow Room and regulation stations helping pupils to feel supported and included.
  • Leaders and governors share a strong drive to remove barriers, have accurately identified priorities and manage change at pace in the best interests of pupils.
  • Pupils feel happy, safe and valued, with warm relationships, rare bullying that is dealt with quickly and a strong sense of belonging across the school.
  • Phonics is well established and taught effectively, so most pupils read fluently by the time they leave, and pupils achieve well in the Year 4 multiplication tables check.
  • Leaders make effective use of external support, including the Minority Ethnic Achievement Service, and provide strong help for pupils who speak English as an additional language or are from families seeking asylum.
  • Partnerships with parents and the community are strong, with improved communication helping families feel informed and involved.

Areas for Improvement

  • Pupils' attainment at the end of key stage 2 in reading, writing and mathematics is below national averages, leaving many pupils without the knowledge, skills and confidence for secondary school.
  • Disadvantaged pupils and those with special educational needs and/or disabilities are not consistently supported to achieve well, and the disadvantage gap remains wide.
  • Curriculum implementation is inconsistent, with practice varying across classes and year groups so that activities do not always match the intended learning.
  • Teaching does not routinely identify or correct pupils' basic errors and misconceptions quickly enough, limiting learning over time.
  • Adaptations to teaching do not consistently enable pupils with SEND to access the curriculum, and tasks sometimes do not match what pupils need to learn next.
  • In the early years, teaching does not consistently reflect the intended curriculum and staff interactions are not always effective at nurturing language development.
  • Early years provision does not ensure children secure foundational skills such as letter formation, number formation and pencil grip.
  • The goals and expectations set for pupils needing additional support are not specific enough, meaning adaptations are less effective.
  • Assessment is not used precisely enough to identify and address gaps in pupils' understanding, particularly in writing, history and geography.
  • Leaders' work to support disadvantaged pupils and those with SEND is not embedded or monitored fully enough to secure the intended impact.

Admissions: local authority offers data from the Department for Education. A school is oversubscribed when at least 5% of the families who put it first were not offered a place, and undersubscribed when everyone who put it first got in but 10% or more of its places were unfilled in the Department's school capacity survey (the latest survey is used for entry years it does not cover). Places: Department for Education, School capacity, from local authorities' annual survey as at 1 May. Each year is the one the school year ends in (2025 is 2024–25); the survey was not run in 2020. Places include sixth form places. Forecasts are the local authority's own for the school's planning area, an area it uses to plan places that is not the school's catchment area. The forecast starts from a head count in 2025; the dashed line is the Department's estimate of places in that area, including those the authority has firm plans for. Planned places are cumulative, and only those with firm plans are counted.

In 2024–25 pupils at Woodlands Primary School attended 92.2% of sessions (the national figure for primary schools was 94.8%). 23.4% of pupils were persistently absent, missing at least one session in ten (nationally 13.0%).

Source: Department for Education, School workforce in England. Each year is the one the school year ends in (2025 is 2024/25). Pupils per teacher counts full-time-equivalent pupils and teachers. Turnover is the share of a year's teachers (full-time equivalent) who were not at the school the following year, whether they moved to another school or left state-funded teaching. Turnover and sickness figures run one year behind the ratios. Sick leave is the share of teachers who took at least one day in the year, so it swings widely at small schools, where a few teachers can make it 0% or 100%. The national figures are for all state schools of the same type.

In 2025–26, 30.3% of pupils at Woodlands Primary School were on SEN support (nationally 15.4%) and 7.6% had an education, health and care (EHC) plan (nationally 4.1%).
