Wigan St Andrew's CofE Junior and Infant School is a calm, welcoming and inclusive school where pupils feel safe and behave well. Safeguarding standards are met, behaviour and attendance are secure, and the early years provision is a clear strength, with children settling quickly and making good progress in early mathematics and phonics. Leaders have stabilised the school after a period of difficulty, rebuilt staff morale and strengthened behaviour and early years provision since the last inspection. Pupils benefit from a rich personal development offer, particularly in music, and pupils with SEND are well included in school life. However, achievement and the quality of teaching are not yet consistently good. Writing is a particular weakness: gaps in spelling, handwriting and sentence structure persist, errors are often not revisited, and programmes to improve writing are applied inconsistently. Teachers do not routinely identify or address misconceptions quickly enough, and assessment is not used precisely to adapt teaching, so some pupils, including those with SEND, do not build knowledge securely. Published outcomes have improved recently, including for disadvantaged pupils in 2025, but evidence from pupils' work shows progress is not secure over time. Leadership systems are not yet rigorous enough to demonstrate the impact of actions on pupils' learning and development. Leaders have identified appropriate priorities and provided professional development that staff value, but this has not yet translated consistently into classroom practice. Governors are committed and provide appropriate support and challenge. Inspectors identified four next steps: making teaching consistently responsive, refining adaptations for pupils with SEND, strengthening foundational writing skills, and ensuring systems consistently demonstrate timely action.
