Eye CofE Primary School is a caring and ambitious maintained primary where pupils are happy, feel well supported and learn to take appropriate risks while staying safe and healthy. Inspectors found the quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, and leadership and management to be good, with personal development and early years provision outstanding. Children get a strong start in early years, the curriculum is thoughtfully built and refined over time, and staff are well trained and consistent in routines. Pupils benefit from strong reading and phonics support and an impressive personal development programme, including leadership roles, clubs, careers activities and community action. Most pupils learn well, and pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities are quickly identified so they can access the ambitious curriculum. However, in some subjects expectations are not consistently high enough and staff do not always check or extend pupils’ understanding quickly enough, meaning some pupils do not achieve as well as they could. Leaders also do not always use the information they collect to spot root causes, gaps in learning and barriers to attendance, and some pupils are absent too often. This was the school’s first routine inspection since the COVID-19 pandemic. It is a maintained primary with 443 pupils, and since the previous inspection it has extended early years provision to include two-year-old children. Safeguarding arrangements are effective.
