Melbourne Infant School is a small, welcoming school that pupils and parents value highly. Inspectors found it performing to the expected standard overall, with pupils making secure progress and developing key foundations in reading, writing, mathematics and phonics. Disadvantaged pupils and those with SEND are generally well supported, and pupils attend exceptionally well. Early years provision gives children a strong start, and the personal development and pastoral care offer is a standout feature. Notable strengths include high attendance, positive behaviour, effective phonics teaching and a carefully redesigned curriculum suited to the school's mixed-age classes. Leaders are ambitious, governance is committed and staff morale is high, with strong engagement from parents and good transition links to the junior school. Safeguarding requirements are met. The main areas for development are around consistency and precision. Leaders' oversight is not sharp enough to spot and fix inconsistencies quickly, particularly in teaching, spelling and handwriting feedback, and support for pupils with SEND or emotional-regulation needs. SEND targets and parent communication about support are sometimes unclear. These issues do not undermine the school's overall expected standard, but addressing them would help secure higher standards.
