Mayflower Primary School requires improvement in the quality of education and leadership and management, while behaviour and attitudes, personal development, and early years provision are good. Pupils are happy, feel safe and describe the school as safe, kind and amazing. The school has worked hard to rebuild its community and create a nurturing, inclusive environment after significant disruption caused by RAAC, which closed the permanent building and led to temporary accommodation and pupils being split across sites. Safeguarding arrangements are effective. The school has high expectations and pupils achieve well in reading and mathematics, where the curriculum and teaching are stronger. Reading is prioritised, phonics support helps pupils catch up, and children in the early years get a positive start. Pupils behave well, benefit from a wide range of enrichment, and pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities are identified well and supported through pastoral work. However, recent work on the wider curriculum has not been fully realised: expectations for implementation are unclear, assessment of what pupils know and remember is inconsistent, and pupils do not build knowledge as securely across all subjects. Attendance procedures have not had a clear enough impact, especially for pupils with medical needs, and personal development delivery, including PSHE, religious education and pupils’ understanding of fundamental British values, is uneven. Leaders need to sharpen monitoring and implementation so that all pupils receive a broad, ambitious curriculum.

Strengths

  • Pupils are happy, feel safe and describe the school as safe, kind and amazing.
  • The school has created a nurturing, inclusive and welcoming environment despite significant RAAC disruption.

  • Reading is prioritised, with strong phonics expertise and effective support for pupils who find reading difficult.
  • Pupils achieve well in national tests in reading and mathematics.
  • Children in the early years receive a positive start, with strong language modelling and skilful questioning.
  • Pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities are identified well and supported by additional interventions and pastoral care.

  • Staff are proud to work at the school and feel their workload and well-being are considered.

  • Safeguarding arrangements are effective.

Areas for Improvement

  • The wider curriculum is not implemented consistently, and leaders have not set clear expectations for how planned content should be delivered.
  • Assessment and retrieval opportunities are inconsistent, so pupils do not always remember important content or build securely on prior learning.
  • The school does not have a clear view of the impact of its attendance procedures and has not acted quickly enough on absence.
  • Pupils with medical needs have not been well supported to access education, including home tuition where appropriate.
  • Personal development delivery is inconsistent, and some pupils have a limited understanding of fundamental British values.
  • The PSHE and religious education curriculums are not yet well established or implemented systematically across all year groups.
  • The curriculum for the school’s alternative provision space has not been completed, so it is unclear how those pupils receive a broad and ambitious curriculum.

Admissions: local authority offers data from the Department for Education. A school is oversubscribed when at least 5% of the families who put it first were not offered a place, and undersubscribed when everyone who put it first got in but 10% or more of its places were unfilled in the Department's school capacity survey (the latest survey is used for entry years it does not cover). Places: Department for Education, School capacity, from local authorities' annual survey as at 1 May. Each year is the one the school year ends in (2025 is 2024–25); the survey was not run in 2020. Places include sixth form places. Forecasts are the local authority's own for the school's planning area, an area it uses to plan places that is not the school's catchment area. The forecast starts from a head count in 2025; the dashed line is the Department's estimate of places in that area, including those the authority has firm plans for. Planned places are cumulative, and only those with firm plans are counted.

In 2024–25 pupils at Mayflower Primary School attended 94.2% of sessions (the national figure for primary schools was 94.8%). 15.1% of pupils were persistently absent, missing at least one session in ten (nationally 13.0%).

Exclusion figures dropped in 2020 and 2021 because of school closures.

Source: Department for Education, School workforce in England. Each year is the one the school year ends in (2025 is 2024/25). Pupils per teacher counts full-time-equivalent pupils and teachers. Turnover is the share of a year's teachers (full-time equivalent) who were not at the school the following year, whether they moved to another school or left state-funded teaching. Turnover and sickness figures run one year behind the ratios. Sick leave is the share of teachers who took at least one day in the year, so it swings widely at small schools, where a few teachers can make it 0% or 100%. The national figures are for all state schools of the same type.

In 2025–26, 7.5% of pupils at Mayflower Primary School were on SEN support (nationally 15.4%) and 2.1% had an education, health and care (EHC) plan (nationally 4.1%).
