St Andrew’s Church of England Primary School, Chinnor is a friendly and welcoming primary where pupils behave well, feel safe and benefit from a broad curriculum and extensive extra-curricular opportunities. Inspectors found the school has high expectations, strong reading provision and effective support for pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) and disadvantaged pupils. Recent improvements to checking understanding in phonics and mathematics are helping pupils achieve better than published 2023 results suggest, and personal development is a particular strength. The school was last inspected in 2013 and was exempt from routine inspection until 2020, so this was its first routine inspection since the pandemic. It has a specially resourced provision for pupils with speech, language and communication needs, and safeguarding arrangements are effective. The main area for improvement is assessment in some subjects, where checking of pupils’ learning is less well developed than in phonics and mathematics. This means staff do not always know precisely what pupils need to do to improve, and the school should make sure assessment is consistently strong across all subjects.
