Westfield Primary is a warm and nurturing school where pupils feel safe, behave well and attend regularly. Safeguarding standards are met, and inspectors found strong pastoral care, positive relationships and a broad personal development offer. Early years provision is secure, with a clear focus on reading, phonics and independence, and pupils generally achieve well in reading and writing by the end of key stage 2. However, the school’s core academic provision is uneven. Achievement, curriculum and teaching, inclusion, and leadership and governance all require attention. Some pupils have gaps in spelling, writing and handwriting that are not closed quickly; their knowledge across the curriculum is inconsistent, and some struggle to explain their learning, especially in mathematics. Teaching varies between year groups, assessment checks do not consistently identify gaps, and support for pupils with SEND is not always well implemented in class. Disadvantaged pupils’ outcomes are weaker than those of their peers nationally, and pupil premium funding is not having enough impact. Leaders have an ambitious vision and have accurately identified the right priorities, with recent leadership changes bringing renewed drive. Governors provide effective support and challenge, and staff wellbeing is considered. The school is larger than average, with below-average free school meals and EHC plan rates, and leaders are at an early stage of addressing the inconsistencies; monitoring and evaluation need to become more precise so improvements happen faster.
