Kiwi Primary School is not yet performing consistently well. The quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, leadership and management, and early years provision are all judged to require improvement, while personal development is good. The school has a clear sense of direction and has begun addressing the most pressing issues, but much of the improvement work is at an early stage. This was its first routine inspection since the COVID-19 pandemic and follows several leadership changes, including a new headteacher in January 2024. The school’s strongest feature is its bespoke pastoral care, particularly for pupils from military families, who make up most of the roll in a context of high mobility. Pupils benefit from a well-planned personal development programme, a wide range of clubs and meaningful leadership roles, and safeguarding is effective. However, the curriculum is not consistently taught as intended, pupils have gaps in prior knowledge, and some early reading books do not match the sounds pupils know. Pupils with SEND are not always well supported, and behaviour expectations are not applied consistently, causing some low-level disruption. Leaders have identified the right priorities and have started to act on them, including clearer writing expectations and improved attendance. The school also has a specialist resource base for pupils with complex needs and a nursery, and staff are better equipped to support pupils with EHC plans. Even so, systems for checking how well the curriculum is being delivered are still in their early stages, and pupils’ recall of prior learning remains a weakness.
