West Jesmond Primary is a highly effective and inclusive school at the heart of its local community. Pupils achieve exceptionally well, behave in an exemplary way and attend regularly. The school has high expectations for all pupils, and high-quality teaching, timely support and strong inclusive practice enable almost everyone to meet the ambitious curriculum, including pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). The curriculum is broad and rich, with careful sequencing and strong local and regional links that help pupils develop a sense of place and belonging. Reading and phonics are taught consistently, early years provision gives children a strong start, and pupils benefit from an exceptional personal development offer with a wide range of enrichment opportunities. Leadership is strong at all levels, governance supports and challenges well, staff value training and feel their workload and well-being are considered, and safeguarding arrangements are effective. This was the school’s first routine inspection since the COVID-19 pandemic and its first since the headteacher was appointed. The school is a foundation primary within the Ouseburn Learning Trust. Inspectors identified no notable areas of concern in this report.
