Benton House School is a newly opened independent special school for pupils with social, emotional and mental health needs, including autism. All 37 pupils have an education, health and care plan. This was its first standard inspection since it was registered in June 2025, and inspectors found all independent school standards met. The school has quickly established a positive, nurturing culture, and pupils are happy, feel safe and attend very well. Attendance and behaviour are particular strengths: leaders' personalised strategies have led to significant and sustained improvements in attendance, and pupils' attitudes and conduct around the school are superb. Most other areas are performing at the expected standard. Pupils make progress in reading, writing and mathematics and access a broad, evolving curriculum. Inclusion is well supported through thorough admission, baseline assessment and bespoke interventions. Leadership and governance are effective, with strong systems for safeguarding, record-keeping and professional development. Staff, parents and pupils speak highly of the school. The main area for development is ensuring teaching is consistently high quality across all subjects and phases, with more precisely tailored professional learning around subject knowledge and pedagogy. Occasionally, teaching activities are not well matched to pupils' needs. The school is part of Acorn Care and Education Ltd and is registered to admit up to 60 pupils, with 37 currently on roll. Overall, it is providing a strong start and meets the expected standard across the evaluated areas, with attendance and behaviour standing out as exemplary.
