The British Muslim School was subject to an emergency inspection commissioned by the Department for Education following concerns about safeguarding. The inspection found that the school does not meet all of the independent school standards that were checked, and the boarding provision does not meet all of the national minimum standards. The school's leadership and management, including the proprietor, are ineffective in ensuring consistent compliance with the standards. Safeguarding is ineffective and systemic weaknesses leave pupils at risk of harm. Pupils report feeling unsafe and lack confidence that their concerns will be taken seriously. Staff conduct toward pupils is a serious concern, with evidence of inappropriate language and threatening behaviour that leaders do not address effectively. The boarding provision is particularly poor. Boarders live in unhygienic conditions, with damaged furniture, poor ventilation, and pest activity. Food provision is limited in quality and variety. Safeguarding in boarding is not effective, with significant concerns about staff conduct and inadequate responses. Medication is not managed safely, and fire safety arrangements are not effective. Many national minimum standards for boarding are not met. There are some strengths: recruitment checks and the single central record are compliant, and the provision of information to the relevant authorities is mostly compliant. However, overall, the school does not keep pupils safe, and the proprietor and leaders lack the capacity to ensure that the standards are met consistently.
