Leigh Academy Strood is a larger-than-average secondary school in the Leigh Academies Trust, with a high proportion of pupils eligible for free school meals and a specialist resourced provision for 12 pupils with autism. Inspectors found a school performing strongly in most areas: safeguarding is met, and attendance and behaviour, curriculum and teaching, inclusion, leadership and governance, and personal development and wellbeing are all judged strong. Leaders have created high expectations, pupils are polite and attend well, persistent absence has fallen sharply, and teaching is ambitious and well supported. Achievement and post-16 provision are judged at expected standard. National examination outcomes at key stage 4 and key stage 5 have historically been below average, and GCSE English and maths attainment, A-level point scores and value added remain below national figures. However, leaders are taking effective action; GCSE attainment is improving, pupils' progress from below-average starting points is now close to national average, and pupils with SEND make better progress than their peers nationally. Persistent absence, while much improved, is still above the national average. The next step is to sustain the highly effective teaching and curriculum so that all pupils, including post-16 students, achieve well in national examinations. The report highlights strong inclusion, meticulous use of pupil premium funding, effective careers and personal development, and a happy, well-supported staff body.
