Fairfield House School is performing at the expected standard overall. This is a small special school for pupils aged 8 to 25 with autism, severe learning difficulties, complex health needs and challenging behaviours, all of whom have an education, health and care plan. The school operates across two sites, including a farm site, and has seen significant leadership and staff change, with the current headteacher in post since September 2025. All independent school standards are met and safeguarding standards are met. The inspection found a strong culture of care and nurture, with warm staff-pupil relationships and pupils who typically feel secure and settle well. Leaders have taken decisive action since the last inspection to halt a decline in standards, and recent curriculum and teaching changes are helping most pupils make steady progress. Provision is closely matched to pupils' SEND and starting points, attendance is usually high, behaviour support has been improved, and personal development, independence and enrichment opportunities are strong. Leaders are tenacious advocates for pupils and work closely with parents and external professionals. There are some areas for further development. In a few curriculum areas, important knowledge is not defined precisely enough, so teaching can focus too much on activities rather than the knowledge and skills pupils should gain. Communication strategies are not yet fully embedded and their impact varies across the school. Leaders recognise both points and are continuing to address them.
