Notley High School and Braintree Sixth Form is a large secondary school and sixth form within the Bridge Academies Trust. Inspectors found a school that has improved rapidly and substantially, with highly effective leadership and governance and a strong, caring culture. Pupils feel happy, safe and well supported, attendance has improved, behaviour is calm and purposeful, and safeguarding arrangements meet requirements. Inclusion is a particular strength, with personalised support for disadvantaged pupils and those with barriers to learning, including through the school’s speech, language and communication resourced provision and effective use of alternative provision. The main area for further development is achievement. Pupils generally achieve in line with national averages, and the curriculum is broad and well taught, but leaders are rightly focused on ensuring consistently high-quality learning so that more pupils achieve highly. Assessment is not always used sharply enough to deepen understanding or accelerate progress, and pupils need more opportunities to develop independence, self-motivation and resilience. Pupil leadership opportunities also have a relatively low profile. Overall, the school is in a strong position, with clear next steps to strengthen outcomes further.
