The Nest is a small independent special school for pupils with social, emotional and mental health difficulties, all of whom have an EHC plan and have experienced disrupted education. Following a standard inspection in May 2026, the school was judged to reach a strong standard in every evaluated area: achievement, attendance and behaviour, curriculum and teaching, inclusion, leadership and governance, and personal development and wellbeing. Safeguarding standards are met, and all independent school standards are met. Inspectors found a calm, welcoming school where pupils thrive, attend well despite past difficulties, and make strong progress from their starting points. Pupils close knowledge gaps, gain foundational literacy and numeracy skills, and leave well prepared for college and adulthood. The curriculum is precisely designed to meet pupils' needs and is ambitious for all. Teachers use assessment effectively to identify gaps and help pupils catch up, especially in reading, writing and mathematics. Inclusion is a notable strength: staff know pupils and their families well, and bespoke support breaks down barriers to success. Pupils benefit from a rich range of out-of-classroom experiences, strong careers guidance, and excellent wellbeing support. Relationships between pupils and staff are excellent, behaviour is consistently positive, and bullying is rare. Leadership and governance are highly effective, with committed proprietors who ensure staff feel valued and well supported. The only next step identified is to continue building on new approaches to reading so that pupils' knowledge and skills improve even further. Overall, this is a school performing at a strong standard with no significant weaknesses.
