Alpha Learning Staffordshire is a small independent special school for pupils aged 11–16, all of whom have special educational needs and/or disabilities, including social, emotional and mental health needs, ADHD and autism. Inspectors found safeguarding standards met and an inclusive, supportive culture where pupils who have often struggled in previous settings feel safe, rebuild trust and re-engage with education. Attendance and behaviour, curriculum and teaching, inclusion, and personal development and wellbeing are all judged to be at the expected standard. Notable strengths include strong relationships, personalised support, effective attendance monitoring, calm behaviour management, and a broad personal development programme. However, achievement and leadership and governance are judged as needing attention. Progress is not consistent for all pupils: persistent absence, incomplete work, and weak handwriting or presentation affect some pupils' ability to demonstrate their understanding and develop knowledge securely. The independent school standards are not met for the quality of education and for leadership and management, with leaders' systems for checking the impact of provision not yet ensuring consistent practice and outcomes across the school. The report recognises improvement since the previous inspection, strong support from external partners, positive feedback from parents and carers, and committed staff. Next steps focus on strengthening curriculum impact checks, ensuring agreed teaching approaches are applied consistently, improving writing including handwriting and transcription, and developing pupils' future aspirations and destinations.
