Strengths
- Safeguarding standards are met, with an open culture where concerns are actively identified and managed.
- Attendance expectations and procedures are well embedded, and individualised transition plans help pupils improve attendance over time.
- Behaviour expectations are typically understood; most pupils behave well, bullying is not tolerated, and classrooms are calm and well ordered.
- Inclusion is a strength: leaders understand their community, build positive relationships with families and professionals, and provide effective pastoral and academic support.
- Disadvantaged pupils and those with complex SEND receive purposeful support, including therapeutic expertise and specialist training for staff.
- Personal development and wellbeing are well designed and increasingly ambitious, developing independence, communication, life skills, careers awareness and community participation.
- The school has embedded a culture of early reading, with careful phonics identification and a focus on fluency.
- Staff feel well supported by leaders, including newer colleagues, and most feel proud to work at the school with consideration for wellbeing and workload.
- Pupils feel they belong, are happy and safe, and benefit from nurturing staff and positive relationships.
- Leaders have made astute decisions to improve provision, such as new assessment systems, specialist teaching expertise and a refined curriculum, showing capacity to improve.
- Specialist classrooms, practical resources, and creative opportunities in music, art and clubs broaden pupils’ experiences and build confidence.
Areas for Improvement
- Pupils, including disadvantaged pupils, are sometimes not well prepared for the next stage of their learning.
- Some pupils do not develop and deepen their knowledge and skills as securely as they should.
- Leaders’ systems to understand pupils’ starting points and gaps in reading, writing and mathematics are at a very early stage.
- Pupils are not supported as well as they should be to make progress across all areas of the curriculum.
- The curriculum is ambitious but not taught as effectively as leaders intend, and some independent school standards in quality of education are not met.
- Many changes to the staffing team mean some teaching is not grounded in the specific subject knowledge needed to implement the curriculum with impact.
- Pupils are not learning important knowledge in a logical sequence.
- Pupils’ understanding and fluency in writing and mathematics are not checked robustly, so gaps are not routinely identified or sufficiently addressed.
- Some teaching does not support pupils to build on what they already know and can do with precision, so gaps do not close swiftly enough.
- Recent growth and staffing changes have left school leadership stretched, diluting its ability to secure improvements.
- The proprietor has not been as effective as needed in supporting the school through change, and leadership and management standards are not met.
- The proprietor has not ensured compliance with all independent school standards.
- Development priorities have not been implemented as swiftly as intended, leading to inconsistencies in curriculum and teaching quality.
- Leadership capacity at all levels needs strengthening so all leaders contribute confidently and consistently to improvement.
