Burstow Park School is an independent special school for pupils with social, emotional and mental health needs, and all pupils on roll have an education, health and care plan. In this standard inspection, the school was judged to be meeting the expected standard across achievement, attendance and behaviour, curriculum and teaching, inclusion, leadership and governance, and personal development and wellbeing. Safeguarding standards are met and all independent school standards are met. Many pupils arrive having missed substantial education or with previously poor attendance, and the school's nurturing, carefully planned transition and blended-learning approach helps them settle, attend more regularly and re-engage positively. Strengths include a calm and inclusive culture, strong relationships, tailored support for individual needs, expert subject teaching, effective use of pupils' interests, and a well-considered personal development programme that prepares pupils for adulthood. Leaders and the proprietor have a clear understanding of their duties, communicate well, and support staff development and wellbeing. The main areas for further work are to refine and embed the curriculum so it is taught equally well across all subjects and phases, and to ensure all staff have the subject knowledge needed to support pupils who struggle with reading and spelling consistently and effectively. These are development points rather than serious weaknesses; no evaluation area was graded below expected.
