Manor Primary School, Ivybridge is a good school across all inspected areas: quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, leadership and management, and early years provision. This was its first section 5 inspection, although the school was previously judged outstanding before academy conversion and had an ungraded section 8 inspection in March 2024. It is part of Westcountry Schools Trust, has a communication and interaction resource base for pupils with SEND, and includes pre-school provision for two-year-olds. Since September 2024, schools no longer receive an overall effectiveness grade. Pupils are positive about the friendly, welcoming school, and relationships are warm and supportive. Leaders have managed a recent unsettled period of change well, and pupils continue to receive a good education. The curriculum has been revised so that pupils build securely on prior knowledge, reading is a priority, and pupils with SEND are identified astutely and generally supported well. Early years provision is a particular strength, with children developing language and mathematical understanding effectively. Behaviour, attendance and safeguarding are all positive, and governance and trust support are strong. The main areas for improvement are the inconsistent implementation of the early reading programme, where some phonics teaching lacks precision and checks on pupils’ understanding are not rigorous enough, meaning some pupils do not read with fluency and confidence. The personal development programme is rich but does not give pupils enough planned opportunity to discuss complex concepts such as gender and racial equality and healthy relationships, so some misconceptions are not addressed and pupils are not as well prepared for life in modern Britain as they could be.
