Olympus is a small independent special school for 51 pupils aged 11 to 19, all of whom have an education, health and care plan. The school specialises in social, emotional and mental health needs and autism. Safeguarding standards are met, and pupils say they feel safe and well supported. Behaviour is generally good, relationships are positive, personal development and wellbeing are clear strengths, and attendance is improving. Post-16 students follow personalised pathways and all move on to further education, training or employment, with careers guidance and wider opportunities helping to build independence. The main concern is the quality of education, which does not currently meet all independent school standards, and leadership and management standards are also not met. Teaching, curriculum sequencing and assessment are inconsistent. Some pupils, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities and disadvantaged pupils, do not consistently achieve as well as they should. Gaps in reading and mathematics slow progress, and pupils sometimes do not secure key knowledge before moving on. Inclusion practice is not consistently embedded, and assessment is not used sharply enough to identify and close gaps. Leaders have improved significantly and have an accurate view of the school’s strengths and weaknesses, with effective governance and a clear improvement plan. However, recent changes are not yet consistently embedded, and there is variability in how well systems are implemented. The next steps focus on making teaching and curriculum delivery consistently precise, adapting learning well for pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities, and continuing to reduce persistent absence so that all pupils benefit fully.
