Oak Cottage is a newly registered independent special school, inspected for the first time in May 2026. All pupils have education, health and care plans for social, emotional and mental health needs, and a large proportion have autism. Safeguarding standards are met, all independent school standards are met, and inspectors found the school is likely to meet the relevant standards for its proposed age-range change. The school's strongest work is in attendance and behaviour, which is graded strong standard. Leaders engage well with families, remove barriers, and pupils who previously missed education now attend regularly and behave well. Pupils feel safe, included and valued, and personal development, inclusion and leadership are all expected standard. Pupils make good progress in basic skills and are prepared for their next steps. Areas for development are limited but clear. Teaching is generally effective, though staff interactions and tasks do not always deepen pupils' understanding. The human and social education curriculum lacks clarity about key knowledge, so pupils' recall in those subjects is less secure. Leaders' monitoring of teaching and learning is not specific enough to give staff sharp improvement actions.
