Manor Wood School is a small independent special school for pupils who all have education, health and care plans, mainly for social, emotional and mental health needs and/or autism. It opened recently and this was its first standard inspection after registration in August 2025. The proprietor is Acorn Care & Education Ltd. Inspectors found safeguarding standards met and all independent school standards met, with the school fulfilling the expected standard across achievement, attendance and behaviour, curriculum and teaching, inclusion, leadership and governance, and personal development and wellbeing. The school's strongest work is its pastoral and therapeutic provision. Pupils who have often been out of education for long periods are helped to feel safe, valued and understood, and many have improved their attendance from very low starting points. The curriculum is broad and ambitious, carefully adapted to pupils' SEND and starting points, and pupils are generally well prepared for the next stage of education and life. Behaviour is typically calm and respectful, and pupils benefit from strong careers guidance, educational visits and wider opportunities that build independence. There are still important areas for improvement. A minority of pupils remain frequently absent, missing both academic progress and the school's wider support. Teaching is typically good but not consistently precise in modelling new learning, and the approach to setting pupil targets is not yet embedded, particularly affecting pupils with low attendance. Leaders have made positive changes after early turbulence in some leadership roles, but more work is needed to ensure teaching is consistently effective.
