Meadow High School is a community special school for pupils aged 11 to 19 with moderate learning difficulties, autism and speech, language and communication needs, and all pupils have an education, health and care plan. This graded inspection found the school performing well overall: quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, and leadership and management are good, while personal development and sixth-form provision are outstanding. Safeguarding arrangements are effective, and pupils are happy, feel safe and behave well in a mainly calm and purposeful environment. The school has high aspirations and pupils achieve well, with particularly strong outcomes in the sixth form. Reading and communication are top priorities, and staff use effective phonics, bespoke support and vocabulary-building strategies. Teachers and therapists work closely together to set tailored academic and therapeutic targets, and pupils benefit from extensive enrichment, residential trips, pupil voice and community activities. The sixth-form curriculum is sharply focused on independence, adulthood and work, with excellent vocational experiences and careers guidance. The main area for improvement is that, in a few subjects, curriculum thinking about what pupils should know, when they should know it and how it should be taught is not as secure as it should be. As a result, pupils do not routinely achieve as well as they could in those subjects. Leaders are asked to complete their work refining the curriculum and its implementation so that pupils achieve highly across all subjects.
