Hewens Primary School is a happy, respectful and inclusive school where pupils feel safe and parents are highly positive. Inspectors found high expectations for academic performance and behaviour, with pupils achieving well in reading and mathematics and showing excellent personal development. The curriculum is broad and ambitious, pupils with SEND or recent arrival needs are identified quickly, and safeguarding arrangements are effective. The school is part of The Rosedale Hewens Academy Trust, and this was its first routine inspection since the COVID-19 pandemic; under current arrangements, no overall effectiveness grade was given. The main area for improvement is that in some subjects pupils do not remember knowledge and skills systematically enough, and activities do not consistently help them revisit and cement key learning. This leaves pupils less well prepared in those subjects for the next phase of education. Otherwise, leadership, behaviour, early years provision and the quality of education were judged good, while personal development was judged outstanding.
