Watford Field School (Infant & Nursery) is performing at the expected standard across most areas of its work. Leaders have created a caring, inclusive school where pupils feel safe, behave well and take pride in their learning. The curriculum is well sequenced, phonics is taught effectively, and most pupils gain secure foundations in reading, writing and mathematics. Many pupils speak English as an additional language and achieve well, developing communication skills and vocabulary that help them access learning. Early years provision is carefully planned, with a strong focus on communication, language and early reading. Governance is effective, and personal development and wellbeing are clear priorities. The main area needing attention is attendance. Overall absence and persistent absence remain above national figures, especially for pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities and disadvantaged pupils, and improvements are not yet consistent or sustained. Other concerns include some gaps in knowledge for pupils with SEND not being addressed quickly enough, learning that is sometimes not matched precisely to what pupils already know, and support for a small number of pupils that is not sharply focused on their learning or targets. In early years, self-chosen activities do not always match children's exact next steps. Recent leadership changes also mean some systems are still developing. Safeguarding standards are met, and inspectors found an open culture where concerns are identified and managed. The next steps focus on securing sustained attendance improvements, addressing key knowledge gaps for pupils with SEND with well-trained staff, and matching activities more precisely to pupils' needs and abilities, including in early years. Overall, pupils leave the school confident, curious and ready for the next stage, but leaders need to secure more consistent progress for all groups.

  • Learning is sometimes not matched closely enough to what pupils already know.

  • In early years, self-chosen activities do not always match children's exact next steps, so some children, including those with SEND, do not build knowledge as quickly.
  • Support for a small number of pupils is not always focused sharply enough on their learning or targets.
  • Recent leadership changes mean some systems are still developing and impact checking is at an early stage.

Admissions: local authority offers data from the Department for Education. A school is oversubscribed when at least 5% of the families who put it first were not offered a place, and undersubscribed when everyone who put it first got in but 10% or more of its places were unfilled in the Department's school capacity survey (the latest survey is used for entry years it does not cover). Places: Department for Education, School capacity, from local authorities' annual survey as at 1 May. Each year is the one the school year ends in (2025 is 2024–25); the survey was not run in 2020. Places include sixth form places. Forecasts are the local authority's own for the school's planning area, an area it uses to plan places that is not the school's catchment area. The forecast starts from a head count in 2025; the dashed line is the Department's estimate of places in that area, including those the authority has firm plans for. Planned places are cumulative, and only those with firm plans are counted.

In 2024–25 pupils at Watford Field School (Infant & Nursery) attended 93.7% of sessions (the national figure for primary schools was 94.8%). 16.9% of pupils were persistently absent, missing at least one session in ten (nationally 13.0%).

A pupil can be suspended more than once, so suspensions per 100 pupils can be higher than the share of pupils suspended. Very small numbers are hidden by the DfE. Exclusion figures dropped in 2020 and 2021 because of school closures.

Source: Department for Education, School workforce in England. Each year is the one the school year ends in (2025 is 2024/25). Pupils per teacher counts full-time-equivalent pupils and teachers. Turnover is the share of a year's teachers (full-time equivalent) who were not at the school the following year, whether they moved to another school or left state-funded teaching. Turnover and sickness figures run one year behind the ratios. Sick leave is the share of teachers who took at least one day in the year, so it swings widely at small schools, where a few teachers can make it 0% or 100%. The national figures are for all state schools of the same type.

In 2025–26, 9.5% of pupils at Watford Field School (Infant & Nursery) were on SEN support (nationally 15.4%) and 2.6% had an education, health and care (EHC) plan (nationally 4.1%).
