West Walton Community Primary School

West Walton Community Primary School is a maintained primary in the Windmill Federation. This was its first routine inspection since the pandemic and followed a previous good judgement. Inspectors found a school that has begun to improve its curriculum and has strong pastoral and early-years work, but pupils are not yet achieving as well as they could because the previous curriculum left gaps and current subject planning and staff training are uneven. Strengths include warm relationships with families, effective identification and support for pupils with SEND, a strong early reading and phonics offer, and welcoming early years provision where children settle quickly and are well supported. Pupils’ personal development is a clear strength: they learn to manage feelings, resolve disagreements, and benefit from trips, visitors and workshops. Behaviour systems are clearer and most pupils behave well, with bullying rare and dealt with quickly; governance is knowledgeable and appropriately challenging. However, some pupils’ learning is held back because teachers do not consistently identify and address gaps in prior knowledge, and in some subjects essential knowledge is not sequenced logically. Staff have not always had the training and support needed to teach the curriculum well, with writing and grammar a particular example. Behaviour is not managed consistently enough, so a minority of pupils disrupt others’ learning, and attendance remains an ongoing priority even though leaders’ actions are beginning to work. Safeguarding is effective.
