Thorpe CofE Aided Primary School is a nurturing village school where pupils feel safe, behave well and have a clear love of learning. Inspectors found strong provision across the curriculum, behaviour, personal development, leadership and early years, with effective safeguarding. The school has responded to low key stage 2 results in 2023 by refining an ambitious curriculum and working with external partners, and results improved in 2024. Pupils, including those with SEND, are well supported and achieve well. The school’s reading provision is a notable strength: phonics is taught effectively and pupils who fall behind are helped to catch up quickly. Pupils’ personal development is also strong, with a wide range of enrichment, careers activities and opportunities to develop mature attitudes to diversity. Attendance has improved overall, although a small number of pupils still do not attend frequently enough. The main area for improvement is assessment. In some lessons, teachers do not use checks of pupils’ learning effectively enough to identify gaps and adapt future teaching or interventions. This means some pupils’ misconceptions or missing knowledge are not always addressed swiftly. This was the first routine inspection since the COVID-19 pandemic, and inspectors took the pandemic’s impact into account.
