Mill Green School is a special school for pupils aged 14 to 19, all of whom have education, health and care plans, including pupils with profound and multiple learning difficulties, severe learning difficulties, autism and additional complex needs. Inspectors found a warm, compassionate and safe school where pupils are happy, well cared for and behave exceptionally well. Staff have a strong understanding of pupils’ complex needs, and the school has high expectations for what pupils can achieve. The school performs well overall. Its personal development offer is exceptionally strong, with a broad range of experiences, vocational opportunities, careers support and preparation for adulthood, including in the sixth form. Leadership is effective, staff feel well supported, governors know the school accurately, and safeguarding arrangements are effective. The curriculum is suitably ambitious and well delivered in most subjects, with clear pathways and strong transition planning. There are two main areas for improvement. The new phonics programme is still in its early stages, is not delivered consistently well, and reading books are sometimes not matched closely enough to pupils’ phonics knowledge, which slows progress for some pupils who find reading difficult. In some subjects, leaders are not yet clear enough about the essential knowledge pupils should learn and when it should be taught, so pupils are not always supported to build their knowledge securely over time.

Source: Department for Education, School workforce in England. Each year is the one the school year ends in (2025 is 2024/25). Pupils per teacher counts full-time-equivalent pupils and teachers. Turnover is the share of a year's teachers (full-time equivalent) who were not at the school the following year, whether they moved to another school or left state-funded teaching. Turnover and sickness figures run one year behind the ratios. Sick leave is the share of teachers who took at least one day in the year, so it swings widely at small schools, where a few teachers can make it 0% or 100%. The national figures are for all state schools of the same type.
