Insights Independent School is an independent special school for 59 pupils, all of whom have an education, health and care plan, operating across lower and upper sites. The school has a clear ambition to prepare pupils well for adulthood, and its strongest work is in personal development and wellbeing. Pupils receive pastoral support, mentoring and therapeutic sessions, learn about relationships and staying safe, and benefit from a broad enrichment and careers offer that includes work experience, creative opportunities and well-planned transitions. Safeguarding standards are met, and pupils largely feel safe and supported. There are significant weaknesses in several core areas. Achievement, attendance and behaviour, curriculum and teaching, inclusion, and leadership and governance all require attention. Teaching and the curriculum are not consistently effective, the phonics programme is at an early stage, and pupils who are early readers do not catch up quickly enough. Persistent absence remains too high, and actions to improve attendance lack rigour. Behaviour expectations are high but are applied inconsistently, and behaviour records are not precise enough, so some pupils disengage or disrupt learning. Inclusion support is not applied consistently, and leaders do not monitor the impact of interventions well enough. The proprietor has not ensured all independent school standards are met, with standards not met in quality of education, welfare, health and safety, and leadership and management. Leaders know their priorities and have shown some capacity to improve, but improvements are not yet embedded or consistently effective, and some pupils, including disadvantaged pupils and those with complex special educational needs and/or disabilities, are not yet securely prepared for their next stage.
